The mission of the Castle Shannon Police Department is to provide professional services through proactive management for it 8000 plus residents plus businesses and the public that visit the community. Our department consists of 11 full-time officers and a full time desk clerk managed by the Chief of Police. The Police department is operated with state of the art technical support. Records are managed through computers in the police station and in each of the patrol vehicles.

Computers are vital to the officers on patrol. Officers are able to search for information on motorists or suspicious persons through a variety of Federal and State databases. Each officer has been trained in many areas of computer operations.

The police department operations are divided into many units. The department's K-9 patrol walks various areas to secure businesses and our public parks. The department K-9 Unit has the ability to track persons, search for narcotics and protect officers. Due to state roadways in the community, the department manages a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Unit. This unit inspects commercial vehicles of all sizes for vehicle equipment safety. With two elementary schools in the community two officers are assigned to the D.A.R.E. Program. Officers instruct students in drug and alcohol resistance and personal safety.

A unit has been designed to carry the burden of Criminal Investigations and Crime Scene Management. One officer follows up on the investigations of crimes in the borough. To support patrol units, four officers are assigned to patrol. They cover all areas of the community through their shifts with bicycles carried on the rear of their vehicles.

One of the first goals of the police department is to provide many hours of training and education to its officers. Officers are trained year round in many areas of police work to allow them to be well rounded in their assignments and the incidents they encounter.

A large step was achieved in the last few years in the Mutual Aid Agreement of the 16 South Hills Area Council of Government Police Departments. When needed officers of neighboring communities work on serious incidents and investigations. Having mutual support provides manpower response at an instance.

Due to the professional performance by its officers Castle Shannon has received awards in Who's Who in law enforcement, three awards by the AMEN Corner, a Heinz Foundation benefit and commendations from outside police departments.

Through the Castle Shannon Web Site, the police department has many features to view. The public can read the Police Blotter, which displays crimes to date. A Wanted Person section is also available to the public to view wanted persons and their photograph. A form is available for families of Senior Citizens to fill in as contact persons in the event of an emergency. Announcing emergency information there is an Alert screen with vital alerts. For anonymous information the Police Tip Screen is available. This section of the police site was developed to alert the public of the type of crimes and their locations to maintain an awareness of what occurs in the community.

Through my 37 years as a police officer and 16 years as Chief, I have always been proud to be a part of my community. The Castle Shannon Police Department will remain committed to Community Oriented Policing and will continue to provide the highest quality and up to date professional services as possible.

The public should call 911 for emergencies and when they would like an officer to return their call. Telephones in the police department are answered by voice mail 5:00 P.M. TO 9:00 A.M. each day including weekends.

Be a Good Neighbor and always call 911 when you witness a suspicious act or want to report an incident.

     Thank you and stay safe,

     Chief Harold C. Lane
     Chief of Police
